Story/Background :
I created Canada Caliente in Ixelles, Belgium on July 17, 2022. The inspiration came upon receiving a beautiful bottle of Sortilège Prestige Maple Whisky from my dear friend Chris Belec. The goal at that time was to create a cocktail that reflects both Canada & Mexico, two countries that I hold dear to my heart. Truth be told that Canada Caliente was also made under the constraint of the ingredients available in my inventory that day (I did not want to do any grocery shopping!).
I could have called this cocktail Canada Picante due its spiciness, but instead, I settled for Canada Caliente. This is a perfect drink for winter time, but for any time, really !
Taste :
This is a strong, sour and spicy cocktail, with a bit of smoky flavour due to the mix of the whisky & Mezcal. There is also a sweetness element to Canada Caliente, but brilliantly disguised under the strength of the two high ABV liquors, as well as some subtle notes of vanilla and caramel.
Recipe :
1.75 oz Sortilège Prestige Maple Syrup
.25 oz Mezcal
1 oz of freshly squeezed lime juice
2 pinches of Michelada or Tajin spices
1 splash of cherry syrup or maple syrup
2 to 3 drops of spicy bitters or JM Bitters
Shake well with ice and pour into a rocks glass
Garnish with michelada or tajin spices, half-rimmed. Or Garnish as you want!
Story/Background :
I named this cocktail after Lila, one my lovely cats (Sorry Nicky! I am still working on a cocktail to name after you😅). I made Lila's on December 21-22 of 2021 in Ixelles, Belgium. I was hoping to give a nutty twist to a Brandy sour. With the help of Frangelico ( a hazelnut liqueur), I think I succeeded just that . Lila's is not suitabe for folks with nut allergies.
Taste :
Lila tastes like a Brandy sour but with a hint of hazelnuts. It's hard to notice the sugar cane flavour but if you close your eyes and focus purely on the sweetness component of Lila's, you will find it!
Lila is a strong & sour cocktail, perfect for summer and winter, just like my cat!
Recipe :
1 oz Brandy or Torres Brandy
.50 oz Frangelico
1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
.50 oz Sugar cane syrup (Monin)
2 to 3 drops of Angostura Bitters
Shake well and serve without ice into a coupe glass. No garnish.
A cocktail will never judge you -VG
